Class of 1983
Class of 1983
At Springfield High, the basketball team went to the state finals under the watchful eye of coach Wilheim. The school almost burned to the ground during science fair when Mike Haliburton put too much sulfur in his volcano experiment (this was frighteningly similar to an episode of the Brady Bunch). A teachers strike forced us to "learn" 2 weeks into the summer vacation, which was loathed by students and faculty alike. The school past a no smoking bylaw anywhere near the school which proved to be particularly enticing to many seniors as we tested the limits of the school's authority. Jake Thomas took the administration to court for suspending him. He later said this case was instrumental in his career choice as an attorney. It showed him that a just cause was worth fighting for even if the cause was the right to kill yourself. Its hard to believe that the internet was still more than 10 years away and music videos were brand new. Movies were becoming readily available on video and (video) stores were popping up everywhere. We have come a long way since those innocent days in the early 80's. The most frightening terrorist activity we could imagine was a plane being hijacked, and what were the chances of that? Our childhoods seemed safer than that of our kids. The world was smaller and bigger at the same time.

Too much sulfur ?
Too much sulfur ?
Mike Haliburton will be forever remembered as the student who almost burned down the auditorium. His overzealous experiment proved to be too hard to handle and the fire department had to be called to put out the flames of the biggest volcanic eruption the school had ever seen. Mike said this failed science experiment steered him to towards things he could control, which is why he ended up in finance.

Karen Miller and Jackie Reisler were best friends since grade 1. Rarely seen apart, they maintained their relationship to this day and even went into business together. They own and operate a catering company that services more than 200 events a year !

Class Athlete
David Bourne's athletic skills were diametrically opposed to his interest in scolastic activities. He lettered in every sport and went to 2 olympic games as a swimmer (butterfly and breast) He ended up woking as an ad exec in New York City. Guess he didn't need to go to class afterall.
Not a nudist colony
Not a nudist colony
Things got a bit out of hand one spring day, when this motley crew had a few beers at lunch and shed all their clothing. The police were called and the students were ushered back to class. The principal got a citation for not instructing the student body that there was no nude sunbathing in Wolseley Park.
Read a book PLEASE !
Read a book PLEASE !
The library was so quite a meeting place. The girls went there to "study" and the guys went there to meet girls. The Librarian, Mrs. Pilser got so frustrated at the lack of reading that was going on that she offered a prize to the student who took out the most books...
What power failure ?
What power failure ?
The fashion show went off WITH a hitch. There was a power failure which made it very dark and quiet...but the emergency lights kicked in and the positive vibe from the energetic audience made it the most unique show Springfield ever had.
Wizard of Oz
Wizard of Oz
Part of the cast and crew from the Wizard of Oz is seen here. The play was a smashing success and was reviewed in the local papers as "superior to some plays currently on broadway..."
